The connection between the Alpine deck and iPod is just a patch cable, (see pic of my iPod and the Alpine direct link cable below). The Alpine head deck does charge the iPod battery and allows full access the iPod including searching, etc, so the iPod doesn’t have to be out in plain view. Being as the clock is taking up space in a bad location for a clock any how, the size of that hole in the console that surrounds the clock is just large enough to allow an 80GB iPod Video in a silicone skin to slide in, pending there is enough room behind to allow the iPod to slide in far enough to not be in the way of the shifter.
